Participating in this weeks socratic seminar was a great eye opener, the seminar had lots of different opinions that really helped give me a different look at what empathy really meant to everyone in my class. One thing I really noticed throughout the seminar was that a lot of people didn’t exactly know what the difference between sympathy and empathy was, they seem like very similar words with very similar meanings but they’re completely different. Sympathy means to feel bad for someone and feel no connection at all to what they are feelings and empathy is to be able to relate and connect with the other person is going through. People being confused with that really changed the outcome of the socratic seminar, it started a very interesting conversation about the recent school shooting in florida, someone had brought up the fact that no one felt empathy towards the shooter, immediately everyone freaked out because why would anyone feel empathy towards him? The reason why the person asked that was because they were confused with the two words, they had mistaken empathy with sympathy which caused everyone to immediately start attacking the person who was confused, I feel like everyone attacking the person because of what they had said rather than trying to take time in helping them understand the difference really made our socratic seminar unsuccessful.

This week we went on a Junior college trip/campus crawl, we got to visit Berkeley, San Jose State University, University of California Santa Cruz and CalPoly San Luis Obispo. This trip was such an amazing experience, being able to visit 4 different campuses that were all completely different from each other really allowed me to see all of my options. I learned that I don’t like big campuses with lots of people, I really like small private schools with small class sizes although we didn’t visit any private schools, I feel like having gone to a bigger school and just being there allows me to see that I do not belong there.
My favorite school that we visited was CalPoly, CalPoly was such a perfect school, the campus wasn’t too big so I know for a fact it’ll be easy to get a round every day, also the classes weren’t too full, they were small class sizes which meant more teacher professor 1 on 1 time which really matters to me and most importantly, it really resembles High Tech High to me. Other than being incredibly sick throughout the duration of this trip, it was definitely one I will remember forever, getting to look at all of the possibilities that are farther than San Diego has been life changing, during this trip I noticed that for college I do not want to stay close to home. Moving up north and experiencing life on my own will be a perfect opportunity for me to become independent and learn more about myself.
This week my classmates began to present their social topics and why they’re so important to them. They ranged from environmental issues that are impacting modern day society, to mental issues and beauty standards. Some of my favorite presentations were the beauty standards ones, I felt like those were the ones that I could relate to the most because I feel like lots of girls feel like there are many beauty standards that they feel the need to meet and advocating this will help them feel like they do not have to.
For my presentation I talked about the stigma behind menstruation and how we need to be able to create a safe space for women to talk about it openly. The reason why I titled this Social Topics & Time Management is because it is a skill I wish I would’ve used to help me out. Due to my poor time management skills I had to redo my presentation because a lot of my evidence lacked as well as I did not cover important information that would’ve made my argument and reasoning more valid. If I would’ve managed my time better I would’ve had a strong presentation about why I should create a zine about menstrual cycles and why I would be a perfect social advocate for it. In the future I would like to take my time to decide what information makes more sense and make sure I could explain why I even put it into my presentation. That is an important factor to having a successful presentation, being able to explain every image and quote you put in it. This past week we had our project launch, we launched our Chula Vista Zine Fest. The Chula Vista Zine Fest will be a festival where we will be exhibiting student created Zines about important social topics that we feel that others in our communities need to know more about. To kick off our project we took a field trip to The Gathering Grounds which is essentially a church and what we did was first analyze historical topics and what makes them important.
In order to be prepared to analyze the historical topics we were give either an image or quote from an important event, and we had to research it and be ready to share with our peers what we learned. From that we were able to find the importance of advocating for those historical events, for example my topic was about education, and how mexicans don’t test as high as other students, and I learned that it’s important to advocate for these students to be the same as the other students and get some extra help to get them at that level. This week we also had a lecture with Dr. Sasha Kauffman a professor at UCSD, he talked about the anatomical and behavioral difference between female and male brains. Hearing this lecture really helped give me an feel for what it’ll be in college, I learned that you need to always be focused on what your professor is saying because if you turn away for a second you will miss a lot of information which you do not want to happen at all. This week we began to choose social topics to present to kind of kick off our upcoming project. Our upcoming project is going to be zine fest with zines that have been curated by students and as well as curators in our community. These zines will be about social topics that we feel connected to or are important for us to create zines about, I decided to choose periods and the stigma behind them. The reason why I decided to choose the topic of periods and their stigma is because it’s something that woman can never really talk about openly without a person complaining about them being gross or super taboo. Along with beginning to choose our social topics we began to make presentations about our topics, why we choose them, why we think we’d be perfect advocates for it, how it relates to basic/social needs, and who is already advocating it. This week we just had to have the basics, which are just the format of the presentation and basic information about our topics. Another thing we did this week was visit the Museum of Contemporary Art again, we got to look at more of their art exhibits, one of my favorites was the NO+ pieces, they were stamps, posters that were advocading stopping the violence that was going on in their countries, it really stood out to me because it gave me an idea of what I want to put into my own zine. After our tour, we got to go into the lab, we began to look at different examples of zine’s, one that really stood out to me were the photographic zines, they were zines that were just made up of photographs and they looked spectacular, they were mostly all just black and white images which made it look very professional. Once we were done looking at the zines we began to create our own covers that went along with our social topics, so the first thing I did was look for butts and legs of women so that I could somehow incorporate the period aspect into it.
This past week we visited the Museum of Contemporary Art San Diego, our team got the opportunity to team up with the museum, this means multiple visits and also getting their help for our upcoming Zine fest where, we will be exhibiting magazine like booklets that will be discussing different social topics that are huge in today's society. For our first visit we had started off the day by going over a glossary that had multiple art terms used to describe contemporary art. The glossary we had received really reminded me of the elements of art outline we use frequently for biology, which we later on used to help us have a better understanding of the art we were observing that day. We specifically used it while looking at Anaconda map of Chile by Juan Downey, we were given little pieces of paper by our tour guide that had different stages on how to “make sense of art” my group and I had gotten stage three and the main question was “how is the artist using the elements & principles of art & design?”. We began describing the colors and textures of the map, we noticed that it had very pink and orangey shades, it was also very glossy and rough looking kind of resembled a very badly laminated poster. The next day we began to look at past students blogs to create a to-do list for our own blogs, we noticed that the blogs were very personalized and made you feel as if you were having a conversation with one of the students. I had looked at a student named Alex’s blog and I’ve talked to him a handful of times and I really felt that his writing resembled him a lot, I also took into notice that he had very unique titles to his entries which made them much more interesting to read.We also finished watching the film Terra and we made different connections to social and basic needs.
This week we learned about how the teenage brain works, why it reacts to things the way it does, and why we have the impulse to do certain things. We read Pains and Pleasures of Social Life (2008), it talked about how certain parts of our brains process our social and physical pains and pleasures in the same neural circuitry. It also talks about how in certain situations our brains seek a reward which is caused by dopamine being released into our bodies and triggering the reward circuitry which makes doing something risky seem pleasing. As teens, our brains are wired to maximize rewards and minimize threats which causes us to take more risks and make bad decisions. Taking risks wires our mind to think that the outcome of the risk is better rather than not doing it because we will then get hurt, we do more things for “the thrill of it” .We also watched a video called Why the Teenage Brain has an Evolutionary Advantage, it pointed out that legally at 18 you are considered an adult but mentally you’ll be an adult by the age of 25 which is when your brain has fully developed. I feel like I learned a lot from a lecture we had in class where we talked about how there are 5 domains of primary social needs which are status, certainty, autonomy, relatedness, and fairness, without those 5 we begin to feel socially threatened and begin to react in either 3 different ways. The first would be calling out for help, support or comfort which is why, when you feel sad or mad about something your intuition is to go and seek some type of support. The second is the fight or flight response, so when you feel threatened in any kind of way you immediately want to fight or run away from it. The third is collapse, if we can’t fight it or flee, our body signals become defeated and withdraw.
