Scenes from Romeo & Juliet
For this project I became the director for one of the eleven scenes of the wonderful Romeo & Juliet by William Shakespeare. My job as director was to shorten the lines for my actors, so that they were easier to memorized and so that our audience could understand it as well.
Directors Choices
In my scene one of the most important parts were obviously where Romeo thinks Juliet is dead and he is telling her "dead" body how much he loves her and how his life will be terrible without her, which means he will have to kill himself. This part from the scene is so important because it is where you can see how Romeo truly loved her. For this scene I really wanted the audience to be able to feel how in love they were and how without each other there wasn't a reason to live. To get our audience to feel those emotion I had to be precise about what I wanted my actors to do, for example I had Romeo sniffle and cry while he walked to Juliet's body, I also had the Friar freak out when he found out Romeo was in Juliet's tomb because he knew if Romeo went in there something bad would happen. How I made my scene entertaining was by making it dramatic, taking loud deep breathes, slow but loud stomps, crying etc.
What I think makes a good director is knowing what you want and how you want it, to be a good director you need to be sure of your potential and you have to be able to also show your actors potential and push them to the best they could be. As a director I tried to make my actors try their best and try to learn their parts in an easy fun way, I wanted my actors to prove to everyone that they are hard workers and capable of their best ability.Something I would've done differently would've been practicing more with the props because towards the end with the props it became difficult. Playing the part of a director makes me incredibly excited and scared to pursue the job as a director because it feels great to have all of these people listening to you and being able to say I made that happen, but I am also scared because as a director you have a lot of responsibilities to take on. Directing has always been my dream job, I have been into film for a very long time along with cinematography. Something I learned about this project would have to be that there will always be someone that you don't get along with or someone that is always again you, but you have to work with them no matter what and you shouldn't let them affect your hard work.
Romeo and Juliet was written about 400 years ago and I feel like this love story has many similarities to modern day romances, some of the resemblances would most definitely be Juliet's family not liking or approving her and Romeos marriage still happens now, there are many relationships that families and friends do not approve of. But, I feel like we have improved a lot from those time, especially with not ending our lives when the love of your life dies, but I think now we kind think that love is love and we deal with its twisted ways in our own ways.
